Professional Overview

Jim has represented individuals from all walks of life. They have included: the catastrophically injured four-year old son of Hispanic-American farm laborers; a star Broadway performer; skilled laborers and union tradesmen; professional and Olympic athletes; urban office workers; physicians and lawyers; disabled individuals overcoming blindness, deafness and mobility impairments; professional airline pilots, and elite business people. Each of these people have special needs and unique issues relating to their lives: accommodations and appliances; complex claims of income loss and forward-looking life care and future needs; personal stories relating to their impairments and how those impairments will affect their lives, their loved ones and their dreams.

On the financial side, Jim Chalat has advised clients on structured settlements, Medicare set-aside, complex subrogation and reimbursement issues, life-care planning, family distributions, multi-party actions and settlements. The more complex cases also involve multiple defendants and insurers. Additionally, Mr. Chalat has managed cases in which there are parallel workers’ compensation claims and contested proceedings. It is common in catastrophic motor vehicle cases that there are related criminal actions involving the at-fault party. These require attention to victim impact statements, monitoring the criminal proceedings, and advising on the ethics of participation as victims in adjoining criminal proceedings.

It is important in such cases for the lawyer to be able to fully understand each individual client and their families in order to interpret, evaluate, and present their case.

Each case is different on the facts.  Although prior cases may inform the outcome, procedure and nuance of any case, it is helpful to have a wide range of experience in cases. The cases Jim Chalat has won include car, truck and pedestrian accidents; premises/slip and fall cases; complex medical and legal malpractice cases; animal liability/dog bite cases; recreational accidents and skiing accident cases.

Each case is also unique in respect to the injuries sustained by the persons involved.  In this respect, Jim Chalat has presented damages relating to severe orthopedic injuries, complex medical cases involving SCI (spinal cord injuries) TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) neurosurgical complications, medical issues relating to liver, brain, gastroenterology and ENT, just by way of example.
