Breckenridge Skier Hit by Snowboarder

On February 17, 2017, J.S. was skiing on the Columbine trail at Breckenridge Ski Resort in Summit County, Colorado. J.S. was skiing below Jess Porter on this intermediate run. Mr. Porter was snowboarding at a high rate of speed when crashed into J.S. from behind. J.S. was skiing with a companion who was behind him at the time of the collision. The companion caught the entire accident on his Go-Pro camera, leaving no doubt as to liability for the collision.

J.S. sustained a left femur fracture and a left shoulder fracture, both of which required open reduction internal fixation. He underwent an extensive surgery for his left femur fracture on February 19, 2017 and then a second surgical procedure for open reduction and internal fixation on February 21, 2017. These occurred at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, CO. J.S. was discharged to a rehabilitation unit on February 24, 2017. He was then re-admitted to the hospital at St. Anthony Hospital, Lakewood, Colorado for further post-surgical care, monitoring, and rehabilitation. He is expected to require a lengthy rehabilitation at St. Anthony Hospital, Lakewood, Colorado before being discharged to active rehabilitation in Illinois.

The case was settled for $1.5M in September 2017.
